Throughout our group project we have learned that each of our learning styles contributes to how our group will work together. With each of our styles come benefits and potential draw backs to how each one of us will interact with the group and what level of commitment we will have towards our project. Defining how each learning style and level of learning style will work together allows us to maximize our strengths and provide guidance in areas of weakness.
Our first step was to graph each of our styles so that we could determine in which areas we had balance and which areas we lacked that same balance. This not only allowed us to understand the overall learning style of each group member, but also allowed us to see where each member’s strengths and weaknesses lied.
After reviewing our LSI in a graph format we found that we are a fairly balanced group. Our group has good balance in the converging and diverging areas and we were a little heavy in the accommodating and assimilating areas. This balance is what made it so well to work together as a team.
Honing in on strengths is one of the easier tasks we have no matter what the activity. Refining our weaknesses is what requires a more defined effort. Some of the ways that our group has been successful in refining some of our overall and individual weaknesses is to challenge ourselves to work outside our normal level of comfort. Those of us that are weaker in our Diverging style have to be more conscious of other’s feelings and be more open minded, those that are weaker in Assimilating style have focused more on analyzing the data, those that have the majority of their weakness in the Converging style have been focusing on new ideas for the group, and those that are weaker in the Accommodating style have been challenged to deal more with the group over the phone versus via email and leading more than following.
Each member of our team has a different level of awareness in each learning style. Rather than focus on a particular overall style we focus on the individual strengths within each of our styles and use those strengths to help others in our group develop their weaknesses to help each of us develop into more balanced learners. As we obtain the ability to balance our learning across all learning styles it will enable us all to be better learners.
